FOX 5 said the state's attorney general has serious questions about how the school system reacted to reports of the teenager attacking a student in a bathroom at Stone Bridge High School in May 2021. The school board allowed him to enroll at Broad Run High School while he awaited his trial, but the teenager groped another student there months later, the report said.
A court convicted the teen of sexual battery, abduction, and two counts of sodomy earlier this year, and a judge sentenced him to a juvenile rehabilitation center until he turns 18, WTOP reported earlier this year.
The Loudoun County School board investigated the assaults but did not release their findings because of privacy concerns. That decision caused controversy and consternation from parents and lawmakers.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin made Loudoun County a centerpiece of his campaign. Youngkin said the school board lied to parents and covered up the assaults, and he promised to look into it if he was elected, The Washington Post said. In one of his first executive orders, Youngkin directed Attorney General Jason S. Miyares to look into how the school board handled its investigation of the attacks.
Miyares last week asked a judge to bar the public from Monday's grand jury hearing. The Post reported that lawyers will discuss "sealed filings," which necessitated the closed-door session.
Loudoun County Schools maintain that the board's investigation was thorough. The school system said it had put new measures put in place to help students report sexual assault and harassment, WTOP reported in January.
Loudoun County School board sued to stop the grand jury earlier this year, reports said. Attorneys said the hearings would only further traumatize the victims and be a financial burden on their families and the county.
